A collector I have known since the beginning of my career, over twenty years ago, inadvertently help me see my good fortune. While visiting Door county, this collector had sopped by to say hello. When we said our goodbyes, I mentioned that I was scheduled to lecture at SOFA Chicago that fall. Public speaking had always been my biggest fear. I told them I didn’t know what to say and that I felt pretty ordinary really. Without words they looked at me with this very puzzling expression. After that, I started to reflect on their reaction to my comment and began paying attention to how I saw myself and how others perceived me. I realized I went to the store covered in plaster and wax. I thoughts nothing of spending the afternoon throwing chunks of glass in a garbage disposal in the back yard to create the right size particle for a casting project. I though nothing of tucking the kids to bed, reading them a story then heading back out to the studio to work in the quite for hours. This collector made me realize I have a passion and a way of life that not many people shared in my day to day interactions. They made me pay attention to my gift of inspiration and approbation that I am not like everyone else. Thank you, Judy!
